Angelo Mitaritonna (kneeling on right) playing for the Washington Generals in 1960. Head Coach Red Klotz (kneeling on left)
Billy Mitaritonna grew up in Rosedale, Queens located in New York City. He learned the right way to play the game of basketball from his father Angelo. His journey from Archbishop Molloy high school in Queens, to Westbrook College in Maine, and finishing at St. John's University, is inspirational and heart warming. Billy is now a high school social studies teacher and coach.
Billy Mitaritonna is an ordinary person who accomplished extra ordinary things in life. He went through a lot of failures to get to become successful. After not playing a minute of high school basketball, Billy had a lot of help from his father Angelo, to play 3 years of college basketball. Sometimes, you only need one person to believe you can succeed. Billy was lucky to have several strong influences. This memoir is his way of saying thank you!
Jim Graffam- former Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach at Westbrook College (1990-1996). A member of the New England basketball Hall of Fame as well as the University of New England/Westbrook College Hall of Fame. Coach Graffam said, "What an inspiring story! Coach Mitaritonna uses a folksy style to deliver a true American success story. A story about taking advantage of opportunities and making the most out of them through hard work and perseverance. The inside look he provides into coaching competitive high school basketball is a wonderful bonus. A must read for athletes, coaches, or anyone who has a dream."
